Honolulu Terminal Modernization

Honolulu Terminal Modernization

In August 2017, 澳博体育app下载 signed contracts for the purchase of three new 65 long-ton capacity cranes and modifications to upgrade three existing cranes at its Sand Island Terminal in Honolulu Harbor.  In conjunction with the State of Hawaii’s Harbors Modernization Program, these investments are part of a broader $60 million terminal expansion and modernization program 澳博体育app下载 has in progress to prepare its operational hub in Hawaii for the arrival of four new ships, beginning with the newly christened Daniel K. Inouye, in September 2018.  Taken together, the terminal modernization project and four new vessels represent an investment of nearly $1 billion in the future of 澳博体育app下载's operations in Hawaii.

Built by Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding, the new cranes will have greater lifting capacity, height and reach, which will enable full service of 澳博体育app下载's larger Aloha Class and Kanaloa Class vessels entering service in 2018, 2019 and 2020. The cranes are more efficient, easier to maintain and will be equipped with fiber-optic cabling, enabling faster and more accurate communication of data used in 澳博体育app下载's container tracking system.

Expansion and Equipment Upgrades backtop

As part of the State's harbor modernization plan, the relocation of another carrier’s operations will allow 澳博体育app下载 to expand its current Sand Island Terminal into Piers 51A and 51B. This 30 percent increase in waterfront space will allow for the integration of 澳博体育app下载’s roll-on, roll-off operations that are currently across the channel at Pier 32.

Three new 65 long-ton capacity gantry cranes, the biggest ship-to-shore container cranes to be deployed at any commercial harbor in Hawaii, were delivered in April 2019. Each new crane weighs approximately 1,290 tons. The gantry cranes went into service in the third quarter of 2019.

The terminal expansion and improvements to the gate, container yard, electrical system, cargo identification technology and other equipment are expected to be completed in 2020.

New Neighbor Island Bargebacktop

New barge Haleakala at shipyard on the Willamette RiverThe new flat-deck container barge, named Haleakala in honor of the landmark crater on the island of Maui, was christened on April 23, 2022. Haleakala will be deployed in 澳博体育app下载's Neighbor Island service in Hawaii starting in summer 2022, connecting cargo to and from the U.S. West Coast through its hub terminal in Honolulu.

With a carrying capacity of 620 TEU* and room for 72 refrigerated containers, the new Haleakala is double the size of the older barge it is replacing and will increase the efficiency of 澳博体育app下载’s service to the neighbor islands. At 362 feet long, 105 feet wide (beam), with a deep draft of 17.3 feet and a capacity of more than 12,000 metric tons, it will be 澳博体育app下载’s largest barge.
